Schooldesks Project
In response to Kenya’s education reform, which introduced Grade 7 into primary schools, St. Joseph the Worker Primary School faced a space and infrastructure challenge. Father Peter Ndegwa, the school’s head, reached out to FractionForFuture for assistance in acquiring 30 new school desks with a locker system to provide storage space for students’ belongings.
To ensure the project was cost-effective and locally driven, FractionForFuture activated its Kenyan network, ultimately connecting with Raghib Store, a hardware store in Malindi. Through this connection, they were introduced to Mzee Famau, a highly respected craftsman in Malindi, known for his exceptional woodworking skills.
After a meeting with Famau, an agreement was made to build 30 desks (each consisting of a desk + chair) from scratch within two weeks. This approach not only addressed the school’s urgent need but also supported local craftsmanship and ensured that the desks were built to last.
To document the impact and process, FractionForFuture enlisted Joe Khatsika, a skilled cameraman, who filmed the entire construction process, capturing the craftsmanship and dedication behind the project.
Now, as the final touches are being completed, the desks are nearly ready for delivery to St. Joseph the Worker Primary School, ensuring that the new Grade 7 students will have a proper learning environment when they begin their studies.
This initiative not only provided essential classroom infrastructure but also reinforced FractionForFuture’s commitment to supporting sustainable education solutions in Kenya.
